Solutions for Lower Back Pain
Dorothy Ruggiero, LMT completed a course entitled “Working with the Psoas” which focused on massage techniques for relieving lower back pain.
The course covered the anatomy and hands-on applications of treating the Iliopsoas (psoas for short). The large psoas muscles are hidden behind the abdominal organs originating at the lower part of the spinal column, passing two joints and inserting at the top of the thigh bones. Hands-on instruction given to treat the iliopsoas is by working from the front of the body.
These muscles affect the hamstrings, the piriformis and the other hip and thigh muscles. When malfunctioning, they contribute to hip, low back and leg pain. The tight psoas will cause the hip to rotate forward and increase the lumbar curve of the low back. This imbalance distorts posture and may eventually cause neck pain, as well.
